Art & Earth: Connection & Care

by

Melony Kara Smirniotis

Art & Earth: Connection & Care brings together three bodies of work exploring ocean, earth and floral environments. Inspired by coral reefs, the local landscape and nearby gardens, these tactile paintings celebrate the beauty and interconnectedness of nature while reflecting on our shared responsibility to care for it.

June - 12-14th ‘H2 Flow’ by Jane Latella

Opening celebration 12th, 5-7pm, Artist talk / demonstration 14th, 2-4pm

This exhibition explores the dynamic and transformative essence of water, a

fundamental element that shapes our world and sustains life. The title H2FLOW

suggests the constant movement of water, just like life in its ebs and flows. It also

encapsulates the essential life force that water embodies, urging us to connect

with its powerful, yet often overlooked, impact on our world and inner selves.

This series captures the ephemeral beauty, fragility and profound power of water

and its deeper symbolic resonance in our lives.

Watercolour is a wonderful medium to explore this theme. The paint pigments

cannot work without water. Water breathes life into the pigment. The aim when

using watercolour is to capture the flow and fluid nature of water and its ability to

both reflect and alter its environment. My process involves layering transparent

pigments to evoke that fluidity. There is a constant push and pull with the amount

of water needed to reveal the form and meaning for each subject. Not unlike life,

it is often a case of letting go of the controls and letting the water do its thing.

“A road trip around Australia is the inspiration for this collection of paintings.

As I head north away from the city and turn off the highway, the coastal fringe of tall gums, rainforests and rivers gives me an immediate sense of tranquility.

The deep greens and blues of the coastal forests, wide rivers, waterfalls, beaches and estuaries beckon.

But this country is full of contrasts. Turning West, the greens and blues of the costal forests gradually give way to a new pallet of colours.

Red is the main image which comes to mind.  One can’t escape the flat wide plains of red and ochre - red hills, red earth, red river beds. There is a meditative quality in the quietness of the open spaces punctuated by bird calls and soaring eagles.

There’s a rawness to these spaces which influences how I paint them. These paintings are awakened by the effects of light, serene bays, secluded forests, isolated inland spaces and the stoic white gums of Australia.”
